Covering an area of 392 km², Ranthambore National Park is located in the Sawai Madhopur district of southeastern Rajasthan, approximately 160 km southeast of Jaipur, with the nearest airport also located in Jaipur. The nearest town and railway station is at Sawai Madhopur, just 11 km away.

Established as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary in 1955 by the Government of India, Ranthambore was declared one of the best Tiger reserves in 1973, before being declared a national park in 1980. In 1984, the adjacent forests were declared the Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary and Keladevi Sanctuary, and in 1991 the tiger reserve was expanded to include the Sawai Man Singh and Keladevi sanctuaries.

Home to a large population of tigers, Ranthambore wildlife sanctuary is one of the best places in India to see these majestic animals in their natural jungle habitat, with tigers easily spotted even during the daytime. The best times for tiger sightings at Ranthambore Wildlife Sanctuary are in November and May.

Apart from tigers, other major wild animals found in the sanctuary include leopard, nilgai, wild boar, sambar, hyena, sloth bear, and chital. The sanctuary is also home to a diverse range of trees, plants, birds, and reptiles, as well as one of the largest banyan trees in India.
